Ratanbala scores a hattrick and impresses

Ratanbala Devi, 19-years-old, scored a hattrick for India in a friendly against Indonesia and carries a lot of hope for her country, before the second round of qualifying games for the 2020 Olympic tournament, starting in April.

India beat Indonesia 3-0 in a friendly match on 28 January 2019

If the Indian women’s team had a very impressive 3-0 win over Indonesia in a friendly this Sunday 27 January, probably the performance of Ratanbala Devi was even more of a (nice) shock.

Watch next Friendly Indonesia - India

The forward of Kryphsa FC scored a dazzling hattrick, showing her technical skills, her pace and incredible scoring capacities. Called for the national team last April, the native from Manipur is just 19 years old and already made a big impact on Maymol Rocky’s team.

"I have played in almost all positions over the years. My best position, I feel, is as a striker but I will play where ever the coach wants me to", she told Sportz Dose. Watching her three goals against Indonesia, no doubt she has an impressive striker instinct.

Two years ago she was playing for the U-19 national team and was finally called up for the Senior team in April 2018 for a friendly game against Nepal, where she played lower on the pitch, as a midfielder. She then has been a regular in the team and scored recently against Hong Kong.

Supportive family

Niece of a football player, she started to play with boys when she was a child, before joining a women’s team and eventually Kryphsa FC, a club from the Indian Women’s League. "My parents were always supportive of me playing football and always encouraged me to do my best", she explained.

An admirer of Marta and Leo Messi, Devi was obviously delighted by her performance : "Playing in the Indian jersey is always a huge honour but the feeling of scoring a hat-trick for the country is hard to put into words! It is a memory I will savour for a long, long time", she told the media after the game.

India is preparing the second round of qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic tournament, with the idea to toughen up their game with high standards friendlies : "In our quest to qualify from the Round 2, we have to play against tough teams and both Hong Kong and Indonesia will provide us with challenges of their own and help in our development", explained Maymol Rocky before the game.

With 3 wins in 3 games and Ratanbala rising as a new attacking weapon, no doubt the coach can be confident before the campaign starts on April 1st...
