Who will win the Uzbek Super League?

The second round of the Uzbek league is about to start, and will define who will be Lokomotiv Tashkent's successor and who will be relegated. Get a handle on what’s at stake!

The battle for the Uzbek Superleague title is on

The Uzbek league is played in two phases. In the regular phase, 12 clubs play each other twice. At the end of this phase, the six top clubs then start again a group to determine the winner of the League, while the six last play in the relegation group. However, the original ranking of these 2 groups is recalculated based on the results of the six teams between themselves during the regular season.

In brief, right before the second phase starts (championship and relegation playoff groups), Navbahor is on top (19 points), but followed by the two mastodontes of the Uzbek league, Lokomotiv Tashkent (18 points) and Pakhtakor (17 points). Between these three teams, it will be very difficult to predict the winner of the League. And even Bunyodkor, starting in fourth spot with 14 points, could certainly cause some trouble...

But Shota Arveladze, the former Georgian star and current coach of Pakhtakor, which ended the regular season on top of the table, is confident for the Championship playoffs: "The second phase starts with a different count of points, but it is satisfying for me to have finished the regular phase on top, with the most points (47), the most scored goals (36) and the lowest conceded (12) in 22 matches. All of us are now looking forward to the next stage!"

And it is true that with such stats in the first phase in particular in the attacking sector (36 goals including 22 by Esmael Goncalves (12) and Thiago Bezerra (10)), the Tashkent club can be confident. Goncalves, the Portuguese striker (originally from Guinea-Bissau) especially, who arrived from Hearts in Scotland in January, did not take long to adapt to his new club. However, you can be sure that Lokomotiv Tashkent, the title holder, won’t let the trophy go that easily...

And even Buxoro, who made it to the championship round with the very last spot (6th of the regular season), aims high for the second phase, as midfielder Aziz Ibragimov explained after the qualification: "Now the decisive stage is ahead of us. In the second stage, we will show our real game. We will prove that we are not in the top six by coincidence".

In the relegation group, if Neftchi seems to be difficult to save with seven points only, the battle to stay in the elite will be tight between the others. Kokand-1912 (13 points) and Sogdiana (9 points) are threatened to play the relegation playoffs but can still get back in the top 3 to compete with Nasaf (16 points), AGMK (16) and Qizilqum (19).
