AFF U-15 : who can beat Thailand ?

The AFF U-15 Girls’ Championship 2019 will take place from 9 to 21 May in Chonburi, Thailand. The hosts, who won the tournament in 2017 and 2018, are the favourites but the 8 other teams will certainly not let them win that easily.

The AFF U-15 Girls’ Championship is about to start in Chonburi, Thailand. This tournament, which was for the U-16 category until last year, sees the best teams of South East Asia competing, in a group stage first, followed by a knock-out stage.

This year, nine teams (Indonesia had to withdraw) will be in contention from 9 to 21 May in Thailand. The hosts will be the favourites, as they won the last two editions, but it will certainly not be an easy ride for the Thai team.

The very first edition was held in 2009 and won by Australia, before a long break until 2017. The second edition was held in Laos and Thailand won the final against the Philippines.

Promising players

During the tournament, the Thai striker Ploychompoo impressed with scoring six goals, but the surprise was probably Ralston, the Philippines forward, who was very influential for her team, and scored 4 times.

Last year, the championship was held in Indonesia and this time, the surprise package was certainly Myanmar. They eventually lost in the final against Thailand again, but Myat Noe Khin finished golden boot with 9 goals, and her teammate Swe Mar Aung was right behind with 7 goals -including a quintuple against Singapore!

However, Thailand was the better team and their playmaker Janista Jinantuya, arguably the best player of the team and the tournament, scored the only goal of the final. Not enough, though, to fully satisfy Naruephon Kaenson, the Thai coach.

“Winning the final was good but the game concept was missing. We were weak with the ball possession and this is something which we really need to work on.” Well, if on top of it the Thai team now has a “game concept”, they will be hard to beat !

This year Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, the Philippines will be in Group A while Malaysia, Laos, Cambodge, Singapore and Thailand will be in Group B.
