The Indonesian Cup - known as Piala Indonesia - is a long shot. A very long shot. It started back in May with no fewer than 128 teams involved from Liga 1 (18 clubs), Liga 2 (24) and Liga 3 (86), divided into 16 zones for the first round, which as of early September is just finished. The 64 winners will then face each other in their zone, and the same will apply for the 32 remaining teams after that.

And then it will be time for the Round of 16 where the teams left standing will be drawn into a bracket. From that round on, the fixtures take place over two legs, until the final, which is only a single elimination contest. But we are not there yet! Piala Indonesia is in fact completing its return, after a hiatus of six years. The holder of the trophy was Persibo Bojonegoro, who won in 2012, but they already lost in the first round against Madura United on penalties.

During the first round, no big upsets have occured, as all Liga 1 teams won their games, but some matches proved to be really tight. Persik Kediri, an East Javan outfit that plays in Liga 3, caused a lot of trouble to Persela Lamongan, a Liga 1 side. They opened the scoring in an indescriptible atmosphere and hold the lead for as long as they possibly could:

But Persela finally managed to come back eight minutes before the final whistle, and scored the winning goal five minutes prior to full-time. Cruel for the minnows:

In another supposedly uneven game, PBSL Langsa (Liga 3) managed to beat Persiraja Banda Aceh (Liga 2) on penalties after a 1-1 tie, including this beautiful free-kick from the left side of the box, straight in the opposite top corner:

Renan Silva, Brazilian player of Persija Jakarta, one of the main teams in Indonesia, who beat Persikabo (Liga 3) 2-0 in the first round, takes the Cup very seriously. "As a big team, Persija must have the ambition to win the League and the Cup. We obviously respect our opponents, but we are Persija Jakarta and we are ready to work hard for success".

The Brazilian demonstrated by example, scoring a penalty after seven minutes only, before Osas Ikpefua sealed the game at 82’, finally breaking a very brave resistance of the Liga 3 team:

It’s been a little bit easier for Persatuan Sepak Bola Medan dan Sekitarnya (PSMS), another mastodonte of Liga 1, who beat Kuala Nanggroe of Liga 3 with a flattering 5-1 score. Peter Butler, the coaxh of PDSM, was particularly happy with his players. "I am very happy we can get away with it. Credit to my guys because they played very hard tonight. Their motivation is really good. I hope this can be maintained in the next game", he said after the match.

On their side, Persiba Balikpapan certainly thought they had the games in hand against Deltras Sidoarjo (Liga 3). After 45 minutes the Liga 2 team was 3-0 up, including this great goal right before the break. Look at this fake before the shot:

But the Deltras came back very strong after the break and scored twice (46’, 64’). Suddenly Balikpapan was not that confident anymore, and they needed their keeper at his best until the final whistle, like on this free kick, to keep their advantage:

And the last game of the first round between PSBI (Liga 3) and Persebaya ended up in goals galore for the Liga 1 team: Persebaya literrally thrashed their opponents 14-0, including 4 goals of Da Silva, and this wonderful strike by Ruben towards the end of the game:

Ovan, the left wing of Persebaya, showed some satisfaction at the end of the game. "Coach Bejo Sugiantoro motivated us continuously, in order we do not underestimate your opponent and consider there were no easy opponents. With that in mind, we worked hard to carry the club", he said.
